The Brother Intellifax 2800 is a great starter fax for the small or home business. It has many features that are generally restricted to machines at a much higher price point to this one.

The Intellifax 2800 is an affordable monochrome laser fax with copying capability built in. Features like fax broadcast, dual access, built-in memory, automatic document feeder and auto dialing make this a versatile machine for a busy office.

The 14.4k modem can send a legal-sized document in a little under 4 seconds, while the built in memory has enough capacity to remember 130 pages of received faxes if the paper runs out. This is unlikely except in extremely busy times, as the Intellifax 2800 comes with a 200 sheet paper drawer built in.

There is also a 20 page automatic document feeder that may look a little flimsy, but is much stronger than it looks. This serves both fax and copying, and didn’t jam once in our tests.

Copy quality is good with 64 shades of gray to choose from, even simple images or graphics are rendered pretty accurately. Text is sharp and details with very little jagging on edges. Toner seemed to be evenly spread on larger texts, which is something dedicated printers can’t always produce.

Dual access is a nice feature to have. It allows users to load faxes even while the machine is doing other things, like transmitting or receiving other faxes. This allows users to get on with their work while not having to wait until it has finished doing what it’s doing. A nice time saving feature.

The fax has all the other features you would expect. Auto dials, fax forwarding, broadcasting, speed dialing, data/voice switching, configurable cover sheets and document resizing.

Consumables for the Intellifax 2800 are quite reasonable too. One comes with the unit when you buy it, and replacements are around $20 for a toner that is good for 2200 pages, while the drum is $68 and will last 12000.

In summary, the Intellifax 2800 is an excellent buy for the small or home office. It is cheap enough and robust enough to be worthy of consideration when you next need to buy one. Fax and copy quality is excellent and the machine is flexible enough to fulfill most needs.

For a totally different color and monochromatic printing experience, Hewlett Packard offers the HP LaserJet 5550 for official as well as personal use. This printer gives superior quality printouts at a highly reasonable price. With a well designed chassis this laser jet printer has served our printing needs quite economically ever since we bought it a couple of years ago.

After paying the price for this printing machine our major concerns were speed of work and quality of print outs. Previously we had a printing system at our work place which gave us a pretty tough time especially when large documents had to be printed in a short period of time. Compared to that HP LaserJet 5550 was a sigh of relief and saved tremendous amount of time which was wasted while we waited for prints to come out of our previous printer.

Besides this beneficial feature the HP LaserJet 5550 has several other plus points which we have discovered over years of using it in our workplace. With a 160MB expandable memory, this printer can work with OC as well as MAC and produces fast printouts at a speed of 27 pages per minute for both color and black and white prints. We have a HP LaserJet P4515 in our publishing office, and have had it for a little while now. We are a small publishing house in the North-West and can’t afford the industrial sized printers of our larger competitors so we had to be clever about how we spent our money.

The P4515 was the ideal choice really. Hewlett Packard is a name we knew, had direct experience with and had worked with before. Both I and a colleague had worked with them before and had positive experiences using them. Add to that decent purchase prices, low-ish running costs and a reputation for decent quality printing and reliability and we were on to a winner.

The combination of speed and print quality is what decided the model of the printer we bought. The P4515 prints at around 60 pages per minute, and when it prints, every single page is printed accurately and precisely. At 1200 dpi, the capabilities are there to print detailed and decent images. We don’t do that with our one, although we did test a few to try it out. Each image was detailed, the rendering was exactly like the original and the grayscale made it look almost color.

Text printing is where out interest lies, and where the P4515 excels. There isn’t much difference in print quality between draft mode and normal. Draft prints a little quicker so we tend to use that. You don’t really notice a difference between a 600 and a 1200 dpi printer in text, but psychologically it works for us. Even exotic fonts, headlines or postscripts are printed faithfully and without fault. All edges are crisp and clean, edges are either sharp or round, whichever they are supposed to be, and the fill in larger points is deep black.

The print speed is a boon to us, we need to print a lot so it makes a real difference to our productivity. The included gigabit Ethernet is also a nice move, communication is swift and the 540Mhz processor handles whatever we throw at it with equal gusto.

The P4515 is designed to perform, and while I can vouch for other users, it does for us. It does what we want, when we want how we want, and that’s about all I need from a printer.

Canon Copier ImageClass MF5550

Buying a Canon Copier ImageClass MF5550 has helped me achieve a higher level of efficiency at work. Before that we had a separate scanner, printer and fax machine. The Canon Copier Imageclass MF5550 laser multifunction machine allows me and my staff at the office to do all our printing, scanning, copying and faxes on one piece of equipment. The system is smaller than you think and does not cover too much space.

The machine comes with an automatic fifty sheet document feeder. There is a storage capacity of 250 sheets in the paper tray which suits me fairly well, and is generally sufficient for small businesses or enthusiastic home users. The manufacturer promises a printing and copying speed of nineteen pages per minute, however I think practically it is a little less than that. Personally, I think this is not very fast, but I prefer the machine due to many of its other advantages.

I get good quality prints at a resolution of 600 x 600 dpi. The machine has a single cartridge system as it’s a monochrome machine, which keeps things simple, and cheap. This all in one machine is compatible with all the common operating systems and there are no problems that I have faced with the installation or drivers. The machine comes with a one year limited warranty so it does not hurt to give it a try.

The Canon Copier ImageClass MF5550 gives me a good resolution and image quality in scanning too. The scanner has an optical resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi and an interpolated resolution quality of 9600 x 9600 dpi. The OCR software that comes with the machine allows for editing the scanned text documents. The machine gives high quality scanning options and I am pretty satisfied with what I get.

The built-in fax machine has saved me the money and space required for separate equipment for faxing too. The modem speed is 33.6 kbps with a transmission reception memory of 99 pages. There are a number of different options available for photocopying as well and I am able to produce copies of all sizes on the Canon Copier.

For people who want to save money and get good quality with their documents at the same time, I recommend the Canon Copier ImageClass MF5550 as a useful machine.
