Panasonic has a good reputation when it comes to electrical goods. They carry that trend with them into office equipment with the Panasonic DP-4510. It is a large mono laser printer, copier, scanner and fax built for busy offices that need high quality documents quickly.
The mainstay of the DP-4510 is scalability. Just about every aspect of it can be changed, upgraded or enlarged. There is a dizzying array of paper handling options including seven types of paper drawers, network scanners, print servers, memory upgrades, hard disk, and a variety of finishers. While this may seem a little excessive, it does allow customers to tailor the machine to their exact requirements.
There is a good-sized control panel on the front with one of the clearest LCD screens we have seen. The menu is very straightforward and easy to use. Surrounding the screen are the controls that make everything happen. They are also clear and easy to use, with each function having a separate control button to avoid any confusion.
The DP-4510 is good at what it does, with a print speed of around 45 pages per minute for a typical business document. Despite the speed, there is no compromise with features or performance.
Print quality is good with text and images appearing clear and sharp, even down to finest detail. The DP-4510 didn’t stumble over image heavy documents like some machines do. Each one was printed faithfully, with the 256 shade grayscale accurately representing the full-color original.
Copying is obviously the same print speed and quality, but also has the usual resize and document manipulation options too. The scanner is effective, and pretty quick and produces good scans at 600 dpi. The option of a network scanner adds even more functionality to the device and is a popular upgrade.
Because of the paper handling options there is no standard minimum. The most popular fittings are 1550 sheets, with a maximum of 6250. There is also a bypass facility of 50 sheets and an automatic document feeder which can handle a further 70 sheets.
Toner is good value considering the brand, high yield cartridges are to print around 24,000 sheets before needing replacement. The upgradeable memory or the optional hard drive would allow the DP-4510 to be left to its own devices for a significant period of time.
This is a great multifunction device for those who need good quality prints at speed. Ease of use, and the optional bolt-ons means you can really design a machine that does what you want, how you want it.

Sharp FO 3150 config page
The Sharp FO-3150 fax machine doesnt print out a true configuration page, but it can print a setup list showing the machines current settings. To print the setup list:
- Press the Function button.
- Use the down arrow button to scroll down once. "LISTING MODE" should be displayed.
- Press the right arrow button to select it.
- Press the down arrow button until "SETUP LIST" is displayed.
- Press the Start button.
- Press the Function button.
- Use the down arrow button to scroll down once. "LISTING MODE" should be displayed.

Brother HL 2070N
The Brother HL-2070N is an update to the previous Brother HL-2040, with a slimmed down print driver and networking. It builds on the qualities of its predecessors and improves on all of them.
Like the HL-2040 the HL-2070N is aimed at the light duty home or small office. It isn’t designed or built for heavy duty use. Saying that, we tested extensively and the HL-2070N rose to the occasion each time.
The printer is slim, and has quite a low profile, thanks to the slimmer printer driver. There is a 250 sheet paper drawer at the bottom and a single sheet multipurpose feeder above it. The paper feed is smooth and doesn’t seem to jam, even when we tried to simulate one, the paper was pushed out and re-fed correctly.
Print quality is good, if a little light. With the default settings, black looked more like charcoal, and images came out a little light too. This can easily be addressed in the configuration though, by setting it a little darker. There was some banding seen on images, but again, nothing that would cause the prints to be wasted. Bearing in mind that this printer costs less than $200, the print quality is good. Print speed was also more than acceptable at a rated 20 pages per minute for a text sheet. Response is good, with the first page appearing at around 10 seconds after being ordered. These are almost commercial printer speeds for a third of the price.
Toner is also reasonably priced at around $30 for a 2500 page version, with drums at $58, which are said to last for 20000.
Controls are simple, with a single Go button and four lights above it to indicate paper, toner, drum and power states. They change color, depending on the state which makes checking on the HL-2070N from a distance a breeze.
Surprisingly for this price, the HL-2070N also includes an Ethernet connection and a print server. While this is a welcome addition to any machine, this is aimed at home users. The whole family will be able to share the resources without having to buy many of them.
The upshot is that the HL-2070N is a solid, well built printer that will serve families or small workgroups well. The convenience of laser printing far outweighs that of inkjet, and this printer is a product of that.

HP LaserJet 4600hdn
If you want good quality prints in a hurry, the HP LaserJet 4600n might be just what you need. First released in 2002, we bought it new a little after that. In the intervening years, the models have been improved, refined and changed a lot since the 4600n was new, but we wouldn’t part with it for the world.
It might not be the fastest or sleekest printer in the world, but it has stuck with us through thick and thin and hasn’t let us down once. The only work we have had to do on it has been to change toner cartridges and unblock the odd jam. There are many more expensive printers I know of that demand much more than that from their users.
Hewlett Packard products have always been robust, we have had a few of them, and keep returning because of this and their reliability. Even the drawers are solid and still perform well, without coming loose or getting stuck after all these years.
It’s a 600 dpi print engine that manages to produce decent quality prints at around 17 pages a minute. I don’t time them anymore because it doesn’t interest me, but I did when we first got it and seem to remember that’s what it managed. The text quality is very good. Crisp, smooth text with dark black printing and straight edges make the lettering stand out loud and clear on the page. No other smudging or other markings on the page ensures the print is the only thing on the page to grab your attention.
The printer was originally designed for small workgroups, and I guess that’s what we are, two computers, a router and a printer. It’s easy to use, easy to maintain and gives us no problems whatsoever. The little control panel is easy to read, and the LCD clear enough to be able to understand from a short distance.
We only had to use HP’s Technical Support once, a couple of years ago when something broke, and their support person was good enough to be able to solve the problem in very little time. They sent a replacement part out to us and it didn’t cost us much at all. That’s another reason why we like HP. After-sales support is a true measure of the caliber of a company.
The HP LaserJet 4600n is an effective, reliable printer that doesn’t let you down. If you need a printer and see one of these, don’t hesitate.

Gestetner DSc 424
Touch screen technology has made things easier and the Gestetner DSc-424 is an excellent example of that. I am a freelancer but have been involved in some projects that require massive printing and photocopying. In my search for a combo device, I found the Gestetner DSc-424 and wasted no time in buying it. I have been using it for almost two months and results have been good so far.
Starting with the installation process, it was easy for me to install the Gestetner DSc-424. I just had to follow the guidelines of the user manual and it was a breeze. My main purpose of buying the Gestetner DSc-424 was its combination of fax, printer and photocopier along with a scanner. It is truly a great combination device with each part functioning well.
Printing options on the Gestetner DSc-424 are quite elaborate. It offers both colored and black and white printing. Printing speed is 24 to 32 pages per minute for black and white and 10 per minute for colored prints. It offers a standard resolution of 600 x 600 dpi. The user interface and connectivity features include Ethernet 10 base-T/100 base-TX and a USB 2.0, as well as Bi-directional IEEE1284 with Firewire (IEEE1394) and Wireless LAN networking (IEEE802.11b). There is also a Bluetooth Network protocol, TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, SMB, AppleTalk and other options which are also included. The printer is fully supported on my Windows XP workstation and there are no glitches in using all of its features.
Copying facilities on the Gestetner DSc-424 are satisfactory. Copying speed is the same as printing speed with up to 32 black and white pages and 10 colored pages. The machine takes up to a minute in warming up though the official time is 99 seconds. Zoom of up to 400% is available and up to 100 multiple copies can be made. Two standard paper trays of 250 sheets are available with the Gestetner DSc-424. The DSc-424 also comes with a great toner cartridge which seems to be very economical.
I do not use a scanner often but my experiences, though little, are worth mentioning. The scanning feature offers A3 and A5 sizes and supports scanner-to-email and scanner-to-folder options. TIFF, JPG and PDF formats are easily accommodated in the scanner option. I have used the facsimile function just a couple of times and there were no glitches in the whole process. It has a great modem that offers up to 33.3kbps speed unlike other machines that hardly go beyond 14.4 kbps.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I will give Gestetner DSc-424 8.5 marks for its stellar performance and great printing and copying features.
